This man, James Verone, robbed a bank for one dollar. Why only one dollar? Because he knew that in prison he could get the medical care he could not afford with his part time salary as a convenience store clerk. He was approved for food stamps, but they did little to help his finances. Between his back problems, carpel tunnel, and arthritis, he simply couldn’t handle the pain any longer.

On June 9th, he sent a letter to his local paper, the Gaston Gazette, that stated: “When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. this robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body.”

He then took a cab to the RBC Bank, and handed the teller a note asking for one dollar and medical attention. He quietly took a seat in the lobby and waited for police to arrive.

Since Verone only stole one dollar, he was only charged with larceny. His bail, which he doesn’t plan to pay is set at $2,000, reduced from the normal $100,000. He’s scheduled to see a doctor this Friday, and hopes to get foot surgery, back surgery and to have a protrusion on his check treated.

To me, this is the perfect example of how disturbingly corrupt and unjust our health care system has become under HMO’s. For this man, or any person for that matter, feels that he needs to be imprisoned just to see a doctor, is ridiculous.

This is exactly what I hate about America. Why is it that you can buy an entire house with money you don’t have, but still can’t apply for health care if you don’t meet the requirements? That’s messed up.

It isn’t really that sixth grade is very hard per se (it’s a little bit more of the same stuff from elementary, at least at first - just more classes and more students); it’s the transition that is the killer and the fact that the kids don’t learn basic reading and writing skills well in elementary in the first place. This isn’t because they aren’t being taught - on the contrary, teaching the symbols starts as early as pre-k, kindergarten. The problem is that

They’re too young to really care about made-up intangible symbols and see much value in them. All they want to do is play.
Every year they get more and more stupid.

This is not my observation, but my father’s who works with the little ones in kinder and pre-k often (waste of his faculties, but oh well they’re cute). But it takes THE WHOLE FREAKIN’ CLASS PERIOD for the kids to write down ONE SENTENCE and it’s ridiculous and by the time they do it’s time for something else. There are some kids that simply do not retain information and you’re wondering WTF but it’s true they just don’t retain it.

And plus they don’t allow the kids to talk even at lunch. Mostly it’s because they have very little time and they need to move the kids along quickly, but the thing is that their language skills become much weaker. Without good solid language skills learning to read and write becomes much harder. Also, if you have mixed groups where predominantly Spanish-speakers mix with predominantly English-speakers those Spanish-speakers will be speaking English to each other quickly enough. The peer pressure and need to socialize are great motivators for learning a language. Keeping the kids silent would make their English and Spanish stagnate and even retard. It’s a mess.

And also there is the part where the corporate elite want to eradicate the public school system by demanding too-high standards and having public schools fail them and implementing private charter schools and generally creating a classicist rift between the upper classes that can afford those schools and the poorer classes that can’t. They do this by creating an outrageous lesson plan that has kids actually getting homework in pre-k kindergarten AND foisting off computers and laptops on the kids. Now, kids learn SHIT with computers, and they’re a nuisance to work with. I don’t think I need to explain to you that, we’ve experienced it first hand how terrible they are at actually teaching things of substance, save for a few learning games. They don’t even get time to use them, because as soon as they get the darned things working it’s already time to put them away.

So middle school and high school are forced to accommodate their lesson plans because the kids from elementary are still barely literate and their skills are still very shallow.

School isn’t a game. It isn’t fun. It isn’t fun when a grown-up insists you recognize those odd squiggly lines they draw on the board which aren’t pretty and mean absolutely nothing to you and you have no idea why you have to learn it. And they’re a bitch to learn and memorize and learn what they sound like and the words they form like who-the-fuck-cares? But once you learn them well, once you overcome that great hurdle, then things start looking up. For one thing, you can read that nice picture book you like all by yourself and maybe move on to other great stories. Then you can start having fun and expressing yourself and begin to write about what you know and understanding math problems and what they ask for and understanding the teacher when she explains things and then there comes a point where school isn’t so much of a chore as an opportunity and it might take awhile but you have to get there. And to get there you have to LEARN. THE BORING STUFF. FIRST.

Life is pain. None of these distractions of pretty colors and songs and computer shit that teaches you nothing. Learn the boring stuff first and well and you will have absolutely no problems with anything the rest of your life.

True, my friend, very true.

My statements above were posted out of frustration with others around me who constantly cast bad looks at me, or each other, simply because they don’t agree with my, or other peoples personal taste. It sometimes seems like the whole world is too focused on what other people like, or shouldn’t like, instead of enjoying their own personal taste.

I will admit that I didn’t think about the true point of public art, which is in the end, to be observed and critiqued, whether it be a painting, a song, or a book. Maybe I should have instead simply focused on those who do indeed judge a personality based off of preference (which is something I face everyday.) “You like that book? You’re so weird! You like that music group? You don’t know what good music is!”

True, objective criticism is possible, but when most people judge, it is not under the intelligent guidelines which you have listed, say maybe structure, eloquence and good artistic meaning, at least not pertaining to the criticizers I have I mind. The statement wasn’t aimed towards everyone, especially not towards those who understand the true fundamentals of what makes art art.

Thank you, my good friend, for your feedback. There are times when I simply express what’s in my mind without addressing all of the different angles. Anger can be blinding, and in this case, it most certainly was.

And yes, it’s very frustrating when people say those types of things and judge people for what they like and enjoy. The trouble is that most people a) don’t know what art even is, let alone whether if it’s good or bad and b) can’t talk about why that work/band/movie/book is good/bad. The latter is particularly bad with music or with movies - absolutely no one knows why bad music is bad. With books it’s much easier - after awhile you start noticing what works and what doesn’t.

I suggest the next time someone tries to tell you that this particular movie/book/work is bad, tell them, ‘‘Do you even KNOW the work? You do? Okay then, EXPLAIN IT TO ME why this is bad. What is that? You can’t? THEN STFU.” If they do provide reasons, then you’ll have to judge for yourself whether those reasons fit in with what you know of the work.

Also, there is the author’s intent to think about. If the creator just wants to write a fluff entertainment piece, and several jerks come along analyzing it like it’s fucking literature class, then it becomes REALLY frustrating. Conversely, there are works that are really like the highest of ART and LITERATURE, and here come some of the same jerks whining that it doesn’t have awesome fight scenes and bitching about the unlikable characters and how boooooorrrringggg it is -

And you’re fuming inwardly like THAT ISN’T WHAT THE AUTHOR INTENDED AT ALL DIMWITS but whatever they just have this fixed idea of what something good is like and they don’t see that the author is trying to do something entirely different and you just can’t criticize it for what it isn’t.

The most ubiquitous example of this is effect Twilight, which as we all know is pure indulgence, romantic-romp fantasy fun, and in the past few years we’ve seen a wave of pure utter hatred for this really harmless work to the point where it has just become ridiculous and I think is even indicative of the anti-sex, anti-romance mentality that has popped up in the last couple of years. There are works that do promote a harmful ideology, and I have seen and read them and they are insidious and harmful. Twilight is not one of them.

(Also, we must get rid of this thing about ‘‘Twilight ruining vampires forever omg/having sucky vampires.” Twilight is NOT a vampire book. It is a romance story which uses vampirism as an impediment to the romance. This criticism is more than invalid, it’s stupid.)

This is what English class is supposed to be for: To read works and learn how an author does what they do (using figurative language) to create a work, usually for a purpose (didactic, thematic, artistic/aesthetic, entertainment/wish fulfillment). But since most people our age are nigh illiterate and they believe that everything they see on TV is ipso-facto legit, you get a LOT of jerkwads throwing around their judgment like a sledgehammer. But take my advice and confront these jerks; don’t let them get away with shaming you. If they have a legitimate claim as to why your favorite TV show is awful, then listen and decide if what they say fits in with your knowledge of the show.

Why should someone feel bad for listening to a mixture of sounds and words that is enjoyable to them? And books are written to tell a story and to entertain. Why does it matter to you if certain stories have certain affects on people? Everyone absorbs and reflects on things differently. There can’t be a definition of what is good and what isn’t good because it is a personal preference. And it makes no sense to judge someone based off of that.

While I understand the premise behind your argument, I must respectfully disagree.

First of all, if there is no value system to anything, then what’s the use of critics or even artists? Artists create works not only entertain, but strive towards some kind of artistic goal or purpose - that is, they want their works to be good/well-liked/entertaining and for that you need to follow a set of criteria. Critics judge the artist on that criteria. Without the rules, there is no game and even in art that remains true. It needs to be intelligible first.

Second of all, art does have to have criteria of some kind, which is called form. Music is not a ‘‘mixture of sounds and words thrown together.” Banging pots and pans together and singing off-key does NOT equal good music, or any kind of music for that matter. Music has to have notes, pitch, rhythm, and harmony - there’s a pattern and rules involved that musicians must follow. For writing, you have to follow the rules of writing. For painting, the rules of painting. For example, you can’t just say ‘‘Oh, you don’t need to learn grammar and spelling to be a good writer” - on the contrary, without those you can’t even communicate properly, let alone write.

The second component to art is feeling. This is more or less self-explanatory - it doesn’t mean personal, it just means that art is the expression of feelings and emotions. It is also, however, the controlof those feelings and emotions by putting them into a set, recognized form that doesn’t change. You can say that a wailing baby is expressing his feelings, but no one in their right mind would call that music. A toddler playing around with paint and making globs is cute, but no one would buy it because it’s nonsense.

So art is not relative. There has to be some form or some set of recognizable rules so that people can understand what you’re trying to do. The rules are what makes the game fun and enjoyable. When someone deviates from the rules, the fun instantly stops.

Now, I think what you mean is that you shouldn’t judge a person for liking something you don’t like - there is such a thing called taste. You like some art better than others. But criticizing you for your taste does NOT mean I’m criticizing you personally. There is no relationship between tastes in art and who you are as a person. The same goes for artists. There are some talented artists with difficult personalities or perverse ideologies; there are untalented artists who are the kindest people you’ve known. Art and reality are two different things.

What constitutes good art, though? Good art in all its genres maintain the following:

A form or structure - it is a whole, complete work that stands alone from its creator.
Aesthetic beauty - pleasing to the eye or ear.
Use of good technique.
Imagination.
Eloquence.
Full of feeling.
Good use of artistic meaning.
Universality - the more it surpasses cultural boundaries, the better.

By that (rather loose) criteria a critic knows more or less whether that work is good or not. Yes, there is pseudo-intellectual hipster bullshit that goes on in every medium, but critics typically have seen a LOT of examples of the work they’re judging on and plus they have gone to school and learned to discern these patterns and identify artistic meanings in the work that, say, a 12-year-old has absolutely no clue about. So to a critic something they find exceedingly boring and cliché is new to people who haven’t encountered the same thing before.

So in conclusion: It’s okay that you don’t like the same things I like and vice versa, but don’t say that objective criticism of a work is not possible, because it is.

a juliette blanket would be a soft pink color, and be made of silk. you would curl up in it when you’re in a content mood, and it would make you feel relaxed and help you drift off to sleep. it would be as though juliette is embracing you as she embraced her pillow in un jour.

a romeo blanket would be a deep blue and while it would be soft, it wouldn’t be a fluffy as benvolio’s. you would wrap it around you when you are happy and/or hopeful about a future event, and the blanket would make sure that you stay that way, that you’re joy and hope doesn’t run out the way romeo’s did when he heard that juliette was dead.

a mercutio blanket would be a dark purple and would feel a bit itchy, but still be warm and marry. you would wrap yourself around it when you’re plotting something or trying to escape from queen mab. it would feel like mercutio himself had slung one arm over your shoulder as he helps you with whatever it is you’re planning.
